va va VOLUME

SLEEK AND CHIC IS GOOD but flat and limp is not!
Here's how to turn up your hair's volume...

1. LAYER IN MODERATION. Keep hair close to one length. When you overlayer it—which people mistakenly do in an attempt to create volume—you risk taking away too much bulk and actually decreasing the volume.

2. COLOUR SMART. Lightening your base colour one or two shades "gives the look of more volume. (Glazes and semipermanent dye "won't do the trick because they are stains, which actually smooth the hair even more.) For women who don't want to change their colour, consider using dye for texture—it ruffles the cuticle just enough to create body. In the hands of a skilled colorist, the ensuing damage is minimal—but it's still damage, so try this strategy only a few times a year to see how your hair responds.

3. REVERSE IT. Condition your hair before you shampoo. You'll still get the moisture and elasticity, but you'll wash out any residue that can weigh down fine hair. On days when hair is really dirty, he recommends shampooing, conditioning, and then shampooing again.

4. DRY WITH CARE. Creating volume in fine hair is like making a soufflé—overwork it and the whole thing falls flat. When blow-drying, work on large sections, holding the nozzle a few inches from the hair and keeping it moving.

5. PUT IT UP. To boost volume once the hair is dry, lift three-inch sections and allow them to drop through a mist of medium-hold hair spray, then spray your entire head with dry shampoo and scrunch; the result is hair with lift and a lovely, seemingly no-product finish. For those who hate hair spray, apply mousse to a vent brush and then to damp hair—it won't squeeze the air out of the mousse. Coat the brush with mousse and run it through one side of your hair, then refuel and do the other side.

amp up YOUR PONYTAIL

UN-DONE' HAIR WAS HUGE ON THE CATWALK THIS SEASON...
Here's how you can update / tease your ponytail like in the parades:
* Using the handle side of the comb, separate your fringe (or face-framing layers) from the back of your hair.
* Next, use the comb's teeth to tease the back portion of your hair. Clip the the top layers up and away and start teasing from the bottom, working upward as you release the hair above.
* Once you're done, lightly smooth over the exterior layers of your hair with the comb to tame, and pull the entire back portion into a ponytail. Secure with an elastic.
* Stick the handle end into your ponytail (holding it parallel to the area just above the elastic) and softly tug out a small portion of hair. This will create even more lift and volume.
* To complete the look, tease only the roots of your front layers, and lightly comb out for a cohesive finishing touch.

hot BUNS

THE 'BUN' IS NO LONGER JUST FOR BALLERINAS...
it's been completely transformed - and here's how you can put the 'twist' back into yours'.
1. Pull your hair into a ponytail where you want your bun, then tease the tail.
2. Twist it once, then keep wrapping the hair around itself and pin to secure; the resulting knot should stick out a little from your head.
3. Lightly rub the finished bun with your hands to create a few flyaways for good measure.

shampoo SCHOOL

WANT YOUR HAIR TO FEEL AS FABULOUSLY CLEAN AS IT DOES AFTER YOU'VE BEEN TO THE HAIRDRESSER'S?
It can! Here's how to DIY suds up like your stylist...
* Make sure all your hair is sopping wet.
* Massage a dollop of shampoo into the root area with your fingertips and massage to cleanse thoroughly and stimulate the scalp. Repeat.
* Rinse hair and apply conditioner, concentrating on the mid-lengths and ends.
* Leave the conditioner on while you wash the rest of yourself, then rinse it off with cool/cold water to close the hair shaft and seal the cuticles. This helps boost shine and tame the frizzies.

designer campaign STYLE

COPY-CAT LATEST DESIGNER AD CAMPAIGN HAIR TRENDS WITH THESE DIY TIPS...
Dior's Coiled Curls
Model Karlie Kloss's lush, volumised curls have us lusting for hair with mega bounce, but these curls need some prep work and tools to get it right. Here's how get the look:
Create a centre part, then apply a mousse or volumising product as a foundation and blow dry. Use a 3/4” to 1 1/2” curling iron (hair sections shouldn’t be any wider than the size of your iron), and create an even curl pattern through the length of the hair: wrap the hair, starting a few inches away from the roots and down to the ends. Release the iron and re-wrap each section by hand and clip at the base with a pin-curl clip. Spray with hairspray, let the curls set for a minute or two, then un-clip and fluff.

Bally's Sleek Chic
There's nothing like an extreme side part to edge up a simple, sleek look. Start with a smoothing shampoo and conditioner then blow dry straight. Add a little volumizing powder or dry shampoo at the roots, then create your side part. For a super smooth finish, apply a small amount of shine pomade.

YSL's Retro Redux
Give your bob a kinky twist with some finger wave-inspired movement. Apply a gel to damp hair, create a side part, and add wave clips horizontally, just above the ears, into hair to create the kink effect. Let hair air dry naturally or blow dry on low, and then remove the clips. Apply a molding product to tame flyaways and help mold the wave. You can also use a flatiron to create the above-the-ear kink effect, too.

Roberto Cavalli's Artfully Tousled Waves
We're loving Joan Small's perfectly messy "whip my hair" waves, and if you already have curly or wavy hair, a little beach spray and a diffuser will do the trick. If not, here are some how-to tips on to create a tousled, reverse wave: "Instead of a regular, round wave, the reverse wave is flat and goes in the opposite direction after every (or every other) "S" pattern, meaning the wave isn't symmetrical. Wrap the hair—starting at mid-length—around the curling iron's barrel once or twice. Then go the reverse direction and continue this pattern to the ends. The overall finish still has volume but is a bit more natural looking.
